JULY: my site | in space 3 – Battersea Barge

An evening of performance art on a cabaret barge on the Thames

On Thurs 24th July dynamic performance company Switch take over Battersea Barge with 11 performance artists to create my site | in space – the third in a series of sell out live art evenings.

Expect the unexpected as performances pop up all around you. The artists go beyond the bounds of the Barge’s cabaret stage to perform throughout the whole venue.

Switch have handpicked these 11 compelling young performance artists to create this one-off event. They are the new faces to watch – artists who have already performed at the ICA, Fierce Festival, Whitstable Biennale, Battersea Arts Centre, Rules and Regs, Chisenhale Dance Space and Shunt.

To keep it fresh we never use the same venue twice. Each my site | in space is a one-off: a passing moment, created in a flash and performed only once. Join this up-and-coming company for a intoxicating summer evening of performance art on the Thames.

Chisenhale Dance Space presents an evening of new work and exploration. Kira O’Reilly, MIKS, Olivier Rodriguez, and Helen Schoene, will share the outcome of their research projects supported by The Space Bursary Programme. This unique event will showcase a diversity of movement and body based work by artists at the cutting edge of their art-forms.

KIRA O’REILLY
Syncopal Actions & Falling States
Kira O’Reilly will consider the question: ‘How to have a body now?’ Her research will explore cultivating emergent dances at the point of break down and dance on the edge of the ability to balance. Kira is interested in movement material that does not follow a compositional, dramatic or kinetic logic, but upsets the harmonious mechanics of the body. Kira will be mentored by Doran George during this project.

MIKS
n+1
MIKS is a dance theatre collective of four artists: Ida Uvass, Sara Lindstrom, Pauline Huguet and Anais Bouts, inspired by the writings of Georges Pérec and Oulipo. Oulipo was a gathering of writers and mathematicians in the 1960’s who created works using constrained writing techniques. MIKS will adapt these constrained writing techniques to body, movement and spatiotemporal structures, in order to create new choreographic systems.

OLIVIER RODRIGUEZ
And/Or
And/Or is a collaboration of dancers, filmmakers and musicians, exploring how each form can have a productive interaction in real time, giving the performance work a quality of its own rather than being a dance, film or music piece. The project will involve stripping down the disciplines to their essential elements: sound, image and movement. In the studio Olivier will find new means to escape preconceptions and patterns for making work in order to create a dynamic and exciting fusion of art-forms.

HELEN SCHOENE
What I Wish For
Helen will experiment with live animation and movement, using live performance and animated drawings to create single, but moving frames, similar to stop-frame animation. The drawings will be derived from popular tales and symbols, and will become the site to play on and with. Helen will be working in collaboration with animator and filmmaker Ahmad Habash.
