WELCOME

Helen Schoene I build my reality on fiction. The way I see myself, and how I imagine my ideal self, with all their inner and outer properties is built on fiction in its widest sense: literature, paintings, legends, dreams. In my life inanimate objects have a personality, gender and the ability to speak. I become the woman who faked her own death and apply my own characteristics to a painting of Helen of Troy. I have the grace of Margot Fonteyn, the desires of Anaïs Nin and the co-ordination of a lemur.

My work draws on the playfulness and the possibilities of imagining and constructing worlds and characters. Performance, live art, photography and drawing are the media through which my desire to place myself in these imaginary contexts are channeled. 2d and 3d visual structures become a site to play on, and with, as much as space itself. The interaction of surfaces, materials, textures and the human body, have the ability to create and echo sensations of the surreal and make hidden paths visible.
